21世紀まさに初頭の頃に産声を上げた名高きオンライン百科事典「ウィキペディア」。
部門を『ウィキペディア』(Wikipedia)へと定めたうえで2010年の2月21日に放たれたこの質問は、その投稿者の定め置いた簡潔な題が要旨を述する通り、ウィキペディアにおける中国語の扱いに関する問いを示した。

まるっと簡体中国語で書かれていたり、簡体字と繁体字がごちゃ混ぜになってる記事が多過ぎるように思える。こりゃどうしてまた？ウィキペディアが規制されてる中国大陸で使われてるのが簡体字だ。中国語話者のウィキペディア利用者はみんな、繁体字使用中の台湾から来ている。簡体字の使用者数が今や10億を超えるものであることは承知している。しかしだ。彼らはウィキペディアにアクセスできないわけだ。つまりそこは関係ないということだ。 〔It seems that a lot of the articles are written in Simplified Chinese, sometimes with a blend of Traditional Chinese. Why is this so? Simplified Chinese is used in Mainland China, which blocks Wikipedia. The Chinese-speaking people who use Wikipedia are all going to be from Taiwan, which uses Traditional. I know that over a billion people in the world use Simplified now, but all those people can't access Wikipedia, so there's no point.〕

単なる事実を述べておくと、中国語には非常に多くの種類（簡体、繁体、閩南、漢文その他諸々）がありましてですね、なもので中国語版ウィキペディアで記事における使用語の種類を統制するのは非常に困難なわけです。更に言えば、かの10億の簡体字使用者らがアクセス不能であるという事実を踏まえようが、それが簡体字を使用すべきでない理由とはならないわけです。なぜならばあれが使用されている地は他にもあるからです。つまりそうした方々のために用意しておかなければならないわけなのです。 〔To tell you the truth, since there are many different kinds of Chinese (simplified, traditional, min-nan, classical just to name a few), it would be hard for the Chinese Wikipedia to control which kind of Chinese is used in articles on there. Furthermore, even though those 1,000,000,000 people who use simplified Chinese cannot access the Wikipedia, that does not mean that the articles shouldn't be written in Simplified Chinese because it is used elsewhere in the world, so Wikipedia has to cater to them as well.〕

確か中国語版ウィキペディアには3つのものが存在している：zh.wikipedia、zh-yue.wikipedia、zh-classical.wikipediaとね。正統派と見做されてるのがzh。簡体字のものがzh-yue。zh-classicalについてはよくわからん。区別の具合がどの程度なのかについてはちょっとわからんが、全く同じ単語を使って書かれてる場合であっても、zh-yueよりzh.wikipediaのもののほうが画数が多いというのが普通だ。 〔My understanding is that there are actually three Chinese Wikipedias: zh.wikipedia, zh-yue.wikipedia and zh -classical.wikipedia; zh is supposed to be traditional, zh-yue is simplified, and I'm not sure what's the point of zh-classical. I'm not sure how strictly they enforce these divisions, but in general, articles on zh.wikipedia ought to have a higher stroke count than those on zh-yue even if they use the exact same words.〕
