ゲティスバーグがそうでしょうね。1日限定でしたらアンティータム。丸3日間に及んだ戦闘という点を踏まえてもやはりゲティスバーグに軍配です。 〔Yeah, the bloodiest battle was probably Gettysburg. The bloodiest single day was Antietam. But over the three days of battle, Gettysburg was even more bloody.〕
軍用技術の進歩が戦術面の進歩を遥かに凌いでいたこと、それが南北戦争中に血みどろの戦闘が非常に多く生まれた理由のひとつでありました。当時の戦争といえば古来より変化なきままのナポレオン式「大量動員」戦術による戦い。陸軍士官学校（ならびにその他の軍学校）でも1930年代に至るまで伝授され続けていた戦法です。真正面から大突撃でも相手が槍や滑腔マスケット銃ならさほど大したことにはならずに済んだ。ところがライフル化型マスケット銃やキャニスター装弾ライフル砲に向かって突撃、まさに自殺そのものでした。フレデリックスバーグで北軍側がその状態になりました。そして南軍側がそうなったのがゲティスバーグでありました。 〔One of the reasons that so many Civil War battles were so gory was that military technology had far outpaced the tactics. Battles were still being fought based on the old Napoleonic "mass attack" theory, which was still taught in West Point (and other military schools) as late as the 1930's. But while that grand frontal assault might work against pikes and smoothbore muskets, which were not very accurate. But against rifled muskets and (even moreso) against rifled cannon with cannister shot, it was pretty much suicide. The north discovered that at Fredericksburg, and the south found that out at Gettysburg.〕

「凄惨」これの正確に意味するところがいまいちわかりませんが、とりあえずまあゲティスバーグを挙げておかねばなりませんな。戦闘の直後一週間ほど・・・それこそ町中の川が水路の隅まで真っ赤に染まった。それからしばらく毒の水面と化した。 〔I am not sure what excatly would recieve the term as "bloodiest," but i would have to say Gettysburg, all the rivers and creeks in that town ran red for like... a week after and were poisoned from it for a while after.〕
